1961년 경남 양산에서 태어났으며, 한국외국어대학교를 졸업했다. 미국 웨스턴 신학교에서 목회학 석사 과정으로 신학 공부를 시작하였고, 같은 신학교에서 "루터의 하나님의 뒷모습과 십자가 사상의 연관성"(Luther's Concept of Posteriora Dei and Its Relevance to His Thoughts on the Atonement)이라는 논문으로 신학 석사(Th. M.)를 마쳤으며, 네덜란드 자유 대학교에서 아브라함 판 드 베이크(Abraham van de Beek)의 지도 아래 "그 자체로서의 십자가와 넘치는 십자가"(The Cross as Such and the Cross Overflowing)로 박사 학위(Ph. D.)를 취득했다. 현재 미국개혁교회 교단 신학교인 뉴브런즈윅 신학교(New Brunswick Theological Seminary)에서 조직신학 종신 교수로 재직하고 있다. 미국개혁교회 목사이며 총회 교수와 국제개혁신학협의회 회원으로도 활동하고 있다.
