유네스코 2003년 협약의 이행을 위해 지난 20여 년간 아시아·태평양 지역에서 무형 문화유산(ICH) 보호를 지원해 온 국제 전문가이다. 문화인류학과 비교민속학을 전공하며 한국과 일본의 민속예능, 특히 무속을 포함한 제사예능을 비교 연구했다. 국립문화재연구소에서 중요무형문화재 기록화와 조사 작업을 담당했으며, 유네스코 아태무형유산센터의 설립 멤버로서 아태지역 국가들의 무형유산 보호와 협약 이행을 위한 프로젝트를 주도하고 있다. 연세대학교, 국립경상대학교, 한국외국어대학교에서 강사 및 초빙교수 등으로 활동했으며 현재는 유네스코아태무형유산센터 실장으로 재직하면서 한국전통문화대학교 겸임교수로서 유네스코 정책 및 무형유산학을 가르치고 있다.
An international expert who has supported the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the Asia-Pacific region for the implementation of the UNESCO 2003 Convention over the past two decades. He developed an interest in Korean shamanism while studying at Yonsei University and later studied at Rikkyo University in Japan as a Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship student, conducting fieldwork in Korea and Japan and carrying out comparative research on the two countries’ folk performing arts, particularly ritual performances including shamanistic practices. After returning to Korea, he worked on documentation projects for National Intangible Cultural Heritage at the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and later works at UNESCO-ICHCAP, promoting regional cooperation and information capacity for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, and serves as an adjunct professor at the Korea National University of Cultural Heritage.
