경북고등학교와 서울대학교 공과대학 전기과 졸업한 후 육군소위 임관(ROTC 1기)하여 군 생활을 충실히 했다. 그 후 대한석유공사 및 유공(現, (주)SK)에서 근무하면서 석유산업에 대한 식견을 다졌다. 1984년에 ㈜일성을 설립하여 세계로 뻗어나가는 석유화학 기업으로 성장시켰다. 여든을 훌쩍 넘은 나이지만 여전히 현역에서 명예회장으로 활동하고 있다.
옥스퍼드대학교에서 Advanced Leadership Program, 하버드대학교에서 Building Competitive Advantage Through Operations, 상해교통대학에서 SMBA과정(제7기)을 수료했고, 링컨대학교에서 경영학 명예박사 학위를 받았다. 기업가로서 사회에 대한 책임감과 신앙생활로 품은 소망이 있어 사회봉사에도 전력을 기울이고 있다. 2000년부터 10년 동안 울산테니스협회 회장 등을 역임하였으며, 경북고등학교와 서울대학교 등에 장학금을 기부하는 등 인생의 마지막까지 다른 사람들에게 베푸는 삶을 살기 위한 계획을 세우고 도전 중이다.
1991년에 경상남도에서 산업평화 대상을, 1995년에는 대통령으로부터 전국모범중소기업인상 표창과 자랑스러운 신한국인상 수상을, 전국경제인연합회에서 1999 최고경영자대상과 글로벌 경영대상을, 2008년에 일억 불 수출의 탑을, 2010년에는 국가 산업발전에 기여한 공적이 뚜렸한 개인에게 수여되는 최고등급의 훈장인 금탑산업훈장을 수상하는 등 수많은 상훈을 받을 정도 각계에서 인정받았다.
지금도 등산, 테니스, 배드민턴, 골프 등을 통해 건강을 관리하며, 인생의 고비를 겪거나 후반을 준비하는 사람들에게 용기를 주고자 이 책을 썼다. 사업가로서, 한 가정의 가장으로서, 그리고 신앙인으로서 쉬지 않고 달려온 삶을 정리하면서 여전히 새로운 꿈을 향해 달려가는 모습이 다른 사람들에게도 도움이 되길 기대한다.
Chang Seil graduated from Gyeongbuk High School and Seoul National University College of Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the South Korean Army (ROTC 1st class) and served his country before receiving an honorable discharge. Afterward, he worked at Korea National Oil Corporation and Yugong (currently SK Co., Ltd.), where he learned about the oil industry. In 1984, he founded Ilsung Co., Ltd. and grew it into a global petrochemical company. Despite being well over 80 years old, he remains active as honorary chairman.
He completed the Advanced Leadership Program at Oxford University, Building Competitive Advantage Through Operations at Harvard University, SMBA Course (7th class) at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and received an honorary doctorate in business administration from Lincoln University.
With a sense of responsibility towards society as an entrepreneur and a sense of calling as a religious man, he is proactive in participating in social services. He has served as the president of the Ulsan Tennis Association for 10 years since 2000, and he is committed to devoting the rest of his life to philanthropic activities, such as donating scholarships to Gyeongbuk High School and Seoul National University.
In 1991, he received the Industrial Peace Grand Prize from South Gyeongsang province government; in 1995, he received the National Exemplary Small Business Award and the Proud New Korean Award from the President; in 1999, CEO Award and the Global Management Award from the Federation of Korean Industries; and in 2008, he received the 100 million dollar export award. In 2010, he received numerous awards including the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, the highest award given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to national industrial development.
Mr. Chang continues to manage his health through mountain climbing, playing tennis, badminton, and golf. He wrote this book to give courage to people who are going through hardships in life or preparing for the latter part of their life. Still head of a family and a person of faith, he hopes that his continued pursuit of new dreams as his career as a businessman draws to a close will be helpful to others.
