1915년 처음 시작된 이래로, the Best American series는 매년 그 해에 발표된 작품을 장르별로 엄선, 수록하여 출간하고 있다. 각각의 편집자들은 수많은 간행물에 발표된 수백편의 작품을 읽고 그 중 뛰어난 작품을 50에서 100여편 정도로 압축한다. 다음으로 그 분야의 전문가를 초빙, 20여편 정도를 최종 선정하게 되는데, 이러한 독특한 시스템으로 인해 이 시리즈가 더욱 인정을 받고 있다.
