-- "The Wall Street Journal"

"The book remains a nonpareil: direct, correct, and delightful."
-- "The New Yorker"

." . . Should be the daily companion of anyone who writes for a living, and for that matter, anyone who writes at all."

-- "St. Paul Dispatch - Pioneer Press

"It's hard to imagine an engineer or a manager who doesn't need to express himself in English prose as part of his job. It's also hard to imagine a writer who will not be improved by a liberal application of "The Elements of Style.""

[Second Foreword]

This is a short book because most books about writing are filled with bullshit. Fiction writiers, present company included, don't understand very much about what they do-not why it works when it's good, not why it doesn't when it's bad. I figured the shorter th book, the less the bullshit.

One notalbe exception to the bullshit rule is 'The Elements of Style', by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White. THere is little or detectable bullshit in that book. (Of course it's short; at eighty-five pages it's much shorter than this one.) I'll tell you right now that every aspiring writer should read 'The Elements of Style'. Rule 17 in the chapter titled Pinciple of Composition is "Omit needless words." I will try to do that here.
